In Italy, the remains of a luxurious ancient Roman villa have floated out of Lake Fusaro near Naples. This enchanting appearance is explained by bradyseism, which is a geological process caused by the movement of magma or hydrothermal fluids beneath the Earth's surface.
Lake Fusaro is located in the commune of Bacoli, a region known for its geological variability. According to a study by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, since 2005, the land in this place has risen by about 138 centimeters, so the appearance of the structure from underwater is explained by this phenomenon, Archaeology News writes.
"Walls and rooms from the Roman era were discovered in Lake Fusaro. They probably belonged to a luxury villa," Bacoli Mayor Josi Gerardo Della Ragione confirmed the discovery.
The official suggested that the building probably had thermal baths typical of elite Roman residences.
This region, which was first settled by Greek colonists in the eighth century BC, has been shaped by continuous volcanic and seismic activity. As a result, the Greeks named it "Campi Ardenti" ("Burning Fields") in recognition of its boiling craters and turbulent geology.
According to scientists, Lake Fusaro is part of the Phlegraean Fields, a vast volcanic caldera dotted with fumaroles and volcanic structures such as the volcano Solfatara.
Bradyseism has influenced the region over the centuries, rising and falling periodically, mainly due to subsurface magma movements. Rapid uplift in recent years has resulted in shoreline retreat and seabed rise, which has negatively impacted local ports and marinas.
However, a positive aspect of such underground movements is the appearance of the foundation of a Roman villa that was previously submerged, researchers say.
The ancient building was identified by aerial photography and is being studied by the Department of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of Naples.
