Talks about the possibility of humans living on Mars have been going on for decades. This planet has similarities to ours in terms of its composition, seasons, and surface features, but so far, it hasn't come to the point of settlement.
However, sending humans to Mars is a goal that NASA plans to accomplish sometime in the 2030s. So Metro has published images created by AI to show what life on Mars might actually look like.
Based on the experience of astronauts stuck on the International Space Station (ISS), scientists already know that humans can spend quite a bit of time in space.
What do you need to live on Mars?
Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun, where one year is equal to 687 Earth days, and a day is 24 hours and 37 minutes. There are four seasons on the Red Planet, just like on Earth. However, people everywhere need breathable air, food, water, and shelter. In addition, settling on Mars will mean that you will also need sources of fuel and energy.
One of the proposed technologies is to extract oxygen from the atmosphere. This already exists, as NASA's Perseverance rover is conducting the Mars Oxygen In-Situ Experiment, or MOXIE for short. The device can convert carbon dioxide to oxygen at the same rate as one small tree on Earth. This is roughly equal to the amount of oxygen produced over two years for a person to live for 3.5 hours. So, a significant increase in production will be required.
There is already water on Mars, but it is in the form of ice and mixed with carbon dioxide. According to NASA, they are developing a life support system that can regenerate or recycle water, known as a water recovery system. They are currently testing this system on the ISS.
How to grow plants on Mars?
NASA is currently conducting experiments to grow crops under LED lighting on simulated Mars soil. They are also growing plants using hydroponic methods, which include keeping plants in nutrient-enriched water. In addition, the landers and rovers collect the necessary data, and scientists on Earth create soil mixtures that are similar to those on Mars both chemically and structurally.
How to build a habitat on Mars?
Building viable living quarters requires an inflatable habitat that can be covered with a protective shell. In addition, it is worth remembering the extreme temperature that can be found on Mars: in the height of summer, it reaches daytime highs of 20°C and nighttime lows of -73°C.
So, life on Mars will not be easier than on Earth, because our planet gives us resources for survival, and Mars does not. Landing on the Red Planet for a quick visit is one thing, but making it a long-term home is quite another. Although everything looks pretty good in the images generated by AI. And NASA continues its way to the goal of landing people on Mars.
