A revolution in world soccer: UEFA and FIFA have lost the sole right to host competitions

UEFA and FIFA lose in court

The European Football Union (UEFA) and the International Football Federation (FIFA) violated EU rules on the organization of sports competitions when they banned the creation of the Super League. The tournament was planned to be held with the participation of the continent's top clubs, but it was unfairly blocked.

The decision was made by the Supreme Court of the European Union, Politico reports. In its ruling, the court emphasized that FIFA and UEFA do not have a monopoly on football competitions, and therefore the organizations' approval is not required to hold tournaments.

"FIFA and UEFA's rules requiring prior approval for inter-club football competitions such as the Super League are contrary to EU law. The two football organizations abused their dominant position when they entered into a dispute with a competing league, as their rules are not transparent, objective, non-discriminatory and proportionate," the court said in its ruling. This conclusion must now be confirmed by the court in Madrid.

As a reminder, 12 of the strongest teams in Europe from England, Italy, and Spain announced the creation of the so-called Super League, which will be an alternative to the Champions League, in April 2021. At the time, UEFA threatened to exclude its participants from its tournaments, after which many teams announced their withdrawal from the new competition. However, Real Madrid and Catalan club Barcelona filed a lawsuit against UEFA.
