It is quite possible to escape from winter on vacation without leaving Europe. At least that's what British travel expert Simon Calder says.

According to the Express, he suggested Bulgaria, Montenegro, and Albania as great European destinations in 2024. However, if you want to enjoy the sun and warmth, Calder recommends going to the south of Portugal.

He advises paying special attention to the Algarve, a historic province on the Atlantic coast. Compared to the summer months, it is quiet and deserted in winter. During the day, the air temperature rises to 15-20 degrees and you can comfortably walk and explore the local beauty.

Faro, the capital of the Algarve, is one of the sunniest places in Europe during the winter months. If you are not afraid of cool water, the average ocean temperature in the winter months is 17 degrees and is suitable for swimming for hardened people.

Some of the best "hidden gems" in the Algarve are the cities of Silves, Alcoutin, Castro Marin, and Casela Velha. Here you can find well-preserved monuments of Moorish culture and picturesque architecture with ochre-colored roofs.

The Algarve can be quiet in winter. In addition, some restaurants and bars are closed during the off-season. So, the south of Portugal is suitable for those travelers looking for a relaxing vacation. An undoubted advantage is that prices for any tourist services in the winter season are significantly reduced.
