The winner was determined only in a shootout
On Friday, February 9, the Ukrainian national ice hockey team sensationally beat the Polish national team in the third stage of the second round of qualification for the 2026 Olympics. The winner of the match in Sosnowiec, Poland, was determined only in a shootout. The main and extra time ended with a score of 2:2.
At first, bookmakers did not consider our hockey players as contenders for victory. Bets on the success of the Yellow and Blues were accepted with odds of 7, while the Poles could be bet on with odds of 1.32.
The game was not going well for Dmytro Khrystych's team. In the 7th minute, the Ukrainians missed the puck, after which they were in the role of catching up throughout the first period.
The score was equalized only in the second 20 minutes by Boroday. In the third period, the Poles took the lead again, but 6 minutes before the final siren, Ratushnyi sent the game to overtime.
The extra time did not reveal the winners, and our goalkeeper played well in the shootout. Diachenko saved the decisive shot and for the first time in 11 years, Ukraine managed to defeat the Polish team.
This result allowed our hockey players to lead the standings. To win the group and reach the playoffs, it is enough to beat the outsider Estonia on February 11. The game starts at 17:30 Kyiv time.
