A complete rout and a complete defeat: Germany knocks out Scotland in the first match of Euro 2024
On June 14, in the opening match of the 2024 UEFA European Football Championship, the German national team, which is the host of the tournament, skated over the Scottish national team, defeating the Tartan Army with a score of 5:1. The representatives of Group A played a match at the Allianz Arena in Munich, but there was no fight on the field.
From the very beginning, the Germans were considered the absolute favorites of the meeting and confirmed the bookmakers' predictions, killing the intrigue at the end of the first half. And the Scots, who were inspired by their legendary countryman Sir Alex Ferguson on the eve of the opening match, could not find their place on the field and find the opponent's weakness.
The British team was not helped by the selfless support of the fans who literally flooded the streets of Munich - about 200,000 fans emptied beer stocks in local cafes and bars before the match and then tried to give their team a boost.
But the Germans offered the opponent a pace for which Steve Clark's men were not ready. In the first minute, Florian Wirtz missed a scoring chance when he went one-on-one with the visitors' goalkeeper but failed to convert. And only then did the referee declare him offside.
But the Germans continued to look for ways to the opponent's goal and in the 10th minute Wirtz made a correction and, using a pass from the right flank of Kimmich, shot from 18 meters Angus Gunn. The British goalkeeper jumped to get the ball with his fingers, but failed to save his team.
After the conceded goal, the guests tried to create problems for the Bundestim defense, but Julian Nagelsmann's wards went into the selection, barely losing the ball. And with such intense pressure from the hosts, it was difficult for the Scots to get to the other team's penalty area. Not to mention the dangerous shots on goal by Manuel Neuer.
But the German players doubled the score in the 19th minute, when Gundogan threw Havertz into a breakthrough, the Arsenal midfielder handled the ball and rolled 11 meters to Musiala. Here, the Bundestim ten calmly laid the defender down and powerfully drilled into the top corner.
In the 25th minute, Scotland almost got a penalty kick after a foul on Jamal Musial, but fortunately for them, after watching the replay, the referee pointed to the penalty spot and the goalkeeper was on the spot after the kick.
In the 42nd minute, the Germans shot again at Hanna. The Scottish goalkeeper managed to parry the shot in the center, the ball bounced to Gundogan, who was ready to finish it from the goal line, but he was literally mowed down with two feet by Porteous.
After watching a replay of the episode, the referee pointed to a penalty kick in the visitors' goal and sent off the fouling Briton. And that was the verdict for Scotland, which remained in the minority until the end of the first half, and then Havertz made it 3-0 by converting the penalty and putting the goalkeeper and the ball in different corners.
Going for a short rest, the guests looked confused and demoralized. And after the break, the pattern of the game did not change much - until the 70th minute, the Scots did not score a single shot on goal, and the substitute Fylkrug brought the defeat to 4-0, almost tearing the net with a shot from 13 meters.
It seemed that Scotland had no chance in this match, except for a couple more goals for Gunn, but the guests managed to score a prestige goal. However, it was done for them by Bundestim defender Rüdiger, who in the 88th minute unsuccessfully put his head after a free kick and a McKenna cross.
But Germany put an end to the match. Already in the 3rd compensated minute, Emre Can curled the ball beautifully from 20 meters into the far corner of the opponent's goal.
After this initial 5-1 defeat, the Germans topped their group. In addition to Germany and Scotland, the national teams of Switzerland and Hungary are playing in Quartet A, which will play the first match at Euro 2024 on Saturday, June 15, at 16:00 in Kyiv.
