While searching for relics of World War II, researchers found a Roman sword. The 2000-year-old artifact was found by INVENTUM metal detectors in the forests of the Northern Jura, on the Krakow-Czestochowa Upland in Poland.

Experts confirmed that it was a spatha, a long sword used by Roman soldiers. It consisted of three parts, which, according to the researchers, could mean that it was part of a burial or ceremony, ArchaeologyNews writes.

According to the researchers, since the sword was broken into three pieces, it may have been part of a burial of the Prezor culture.

Historically, the Prezor culture is a mixture of a number of localized cultures that are often associated with the Vandals. In areas of Roman influence, high-status burials of the Prezor culture were often accompanied by Roman imports, where the deceased was cremated and the ashes were often placed in urns, HeritageDaily notes.

It is known that the spatha, as a type of straight and long sword, was used by Celtic auxiliary troops in the Roman army in the first century AD. It later became a standard heavy weapon of the Roman infantry in the third century AD.

Experts note that a modified version of this sword, which was also used by the Roman cavalry, had a rounded tip to prevent accidental damage to the rider's or horse's leg.

Representatives of the INVENTUM association reported that the searchers also found an axe and three perfectly preserved spurs from the late Middle Ages. These artifacts, along with the sword, were sent to the Czestochowa Museum for further study.

"This discovery sheds new light on the history of the region and confirms that the Northern Jurassic still hides many secrets," the INVENTUM association said.
