The Court of Arbitration for Sport has revealed the reasoning part

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has published its reasoning in the case of anti-doping rules violation by Russian figure skater Kamila Valiieva. The 17-year-old native of Kazan tried to explain how the banned drug trimetazidine appeared in her blood.

According to Valiieva, trimetazidine entered her body through a strawberry dessert that her grandfather had prepared on the same board where he crushed his pills. In addition, another steroid, ecdysterone, was found in her system.

During her testimony, Valiieva said that she was traveling to St. Petersburg for the Russian Championships, where she tested positive for trimethazidine, on a train. She left Moscow on December 22, 2021, and returned on December 28.

On December 21, her grandfather gave her a strawberry dessert. She took it with her on the trip - she put it in the fridge and ate it gradually. "I don't eat this in one go. I eat it in pieces," Valiieva said.

As follows from the reasoning in Valiieva's case, the only evidence that the strawberry dessert was the source of the banned substance is Solovyov's words. Apart from his words about the dessert, as well as the fact that he was using trimetazidine at the time, there is no other evidence.

Solovyov's testimony was recognized as contradictory. On February 8, 2022, he claimed that he always takes pills by chewing them. And on May 17, he said that he divided them on a board, the same board on which he could prepare a dessert.

Valiyeva also presented CAS with two more versions of how the doping agent could have entered her body. The substance could have come from a contaminated authorized drug or sabotage/malicious intent by a competitor.

"The room where the athletes were staying at the 2022 Russian Championships in St. Petersburg was filled with strangers who definitely shouldn't have been there. There were many relatives of the athletes who moved freely, had free access to the locker room, as well as to the area where the athletes ate. My mother's friend also received accreditation, but it cannot be said that she is in any way related to sports, but she still received accreditation with a high level of access," Valiieva's words are quoted by the CAS website.

Valiieva could not provide documentary evidence for these versions.
