Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University
The institution was founded by decree of the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1875. Previously, the building served as the residence of the Bukovinian metropolitans, and was decorated by Viennese and Czech masters.
The main building housed residential and administrative premises. The bishop worked and rested here.
Tourists can see the large lobby and the Marble, Red, Blue, and Green Halls, where diocesan meetings and audiences were held.
Be sure to take a walk around the territory, as it is quite large. Nearby is the park of the same name, an example of stunning landscape art. It appeared during the reign of the emperor.
Olha Kobylianska Street
One of the most beautiful streets in Chernivtsi should not be missed. It was founded in the eighteenth century.
At first, it was lined with wooden one-story houses. And in the 1920s and 1930s, more than 50 institutions appeared there. At that time, janitors regularly washed the pavement and sidewalks with warm water and soap. Residents had to wipe their shoes or walk barefoot.
Today, Olha Kobylianska Street is home to cozy cafes, souvenir shops, and unique restaurants. We recommend trying mamalyha made from corn flour and sauerkraut cabbage rolls (holybtsi).
Open-air skating rink
Located on Holovna Street near the Bukovyna Stadium.
The ice rink is open daily from 10:00 to 22:00. Keep in mind that every hour there is a technical break to clean the surface. It lasts approximately thirty minutes.
On weekdays, children under the age of seven can skate for free. However, if they do not have their own skates, they will have to pay an additional fee for equipment rental.
Olha Kobylianska Chernivtsi Drama Theatre
The theater was founded in a three-story Baroque building in 1940.
This kind of art appeared in the city in the late eighteenth century. The first performance Chernivtsi residents saw was an Italian shadow play.
In 1905, the repertoire of the cultural institution of that time was strikingly diverse: from operas and operettas to dramatic and comedic performances, as well as singspiel. Music was played here and the works of Western European geniuses such as Verdi, Wagner, and Schiller were brought to life.
The first theater season in Chernivtsi began on January 14, 1941, with the premiere of Lesia Ukrainka's The Forest Song and ended on May 28 of the same year with the performance of Ivan Franko's Stolen Happiness.
In winter, tourists can see themed performances, including Christmas Eve by Nikolai Gogol.
Chernivtsi Regional Museum of Folk Architecture and Life
An open-air museum on the outskirts of the city.
The atmosphere and way of life of Bukovyna settlements of the XIX-early XX centuries have been recreated here with great care. Tourists will have a unique opportunity to see various buildings of that time, including a church, a smithy, an inn, etc.
Travelers will immerse themselves in the atmosphere of true Christmas traditions and feel the spirit of past generations.
