When to sow kale

To enjoy early cabbage, you can sow its seeds for seedlings as early as February. However, it is important to follow certain timing and rules that correspond to the sowing calendar to ensure that the seedlings are of high quality and the future harvest is tasty and plentiful.

TSN told us how to properly prepare the material for sowing, how to take care of the seedlings directly, as well as the favorable dates for sowing.

When and how to sow cabbage seeds?

According to the sowing calendar, in February 2024, the best days to plant cabbage seeds will be the 11th, 12th, 15th, 19th and 20th.

In March, it is better to plant on the 13th, 14th, 18th, and 19th, and in April – on the 10th, 11th, and 14th. These dates are strategically chosen to match the plant's growth cycle, ensuring a timely transition from seeds to strong seedlings and, ultimately, to a productive harvest.

If you have not purchased pre-prepared kale seeds, you should treat and harden them before planting.

To do this, wrap the seeds in several layers of cheesecloth and immerse them in fairly hot water, but not boiling water, for 20 minutes. The temperature should exceed 60 degrees. Immediately after disinfection, place it on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator. This is done to harden the seeds so that the seedlings are not afraid of temperature changes.

How to sow cabbage for seedlings?

It is better to use containers with drainage holes for sowing. Make holes 1 centimeter deep in the soil at a distance of 3 centimeters from each other, put the cabbage seeds in them, and sprinkle them with soil. Then pour a little water, cover the container with foil, and place the seedlings in a warm place.

The basis for successful cabbage cultivation is soil. You can either buy good soil or prepare it yourself. To do this, take drained soil as a basis and mix it with peat and compost equally. Or you can add peat and sand to the soil in a 3:1:1 ratio.

Also, don't forget that fertilizer is essential for strong and healthy seedlings.

How to care for cabbage seedlings?

The first green shoots of cabbage should appear in about 7-9 days. After this happens, remove the film and place the seedlings in a cool but sunny place. The air temperature should be between +12 and +15 degrees.

After another 3 weeks, you should plant the cabbage in separate containers and remove weak seedlings.

Water the plants as the soil dries. After watering, you can put the cabbage on a ventilated balcony because the plant loves fresh, cool air.

In the second half of April, you can start planting cabbage in the open ground.

Also, don't forget to think about other types of vegetables. Some plants need to be sown now to enjoy the harvest from your garden in late spring and early summer. These include eggplants, tomatoes, melons, gourds, herbs, and more. Calculate the time of planting seedlings in the open ground, take into account your climatic conditions, and you will surely be successful.
