What you need to do with your iPhone before you sell it

Before you sell or give your iPhone to someone else, make sure you delete all personal data. It would seem that there is nothing simpler, but it is not quite so.

Wiping data from iPhone

There are two ways to completely erase data: directly through the iPhone or using a computer. But before you erase all the data, you should save it so that you can easily restore it on a new smartphone. To do this, you need to back up your iPhone.

Here's how to do it:

• open Settings;
• sign in to the user page (your name);
• go to iCloud;
• select iCloud Backup and turn it on.

After that, iCloud will automatically update your iPhone backup every day when your gadget is connected to a power source and Wi-Fi.

If you need the backup immediately, click Backup Now.

You can find your backups in the iCloud menu by opening the Manage Your Account Storage submenu and selecting Backups.

Here you can also delete a backup and turn off archiving.

Once you have your backup ready, you can proceed to deleting data from your iPhone.

Erase data via iPhone

This is the simplest procedure for deleting data from your smartphone.

• go to Settings;
• open the General menu;
• select Transfer or reset iPhone;
• then click Erase content and settings.

Deleting data using a computer

You can also erase all data from your smartphone using a Mac or Windows PC. To do this, connect your iPhone to a computer using a USB or USB-C cable and switch on your smartphone.

On a Mac running macOS 10.15 or later, click the Finder icon and select iPhone in the window that opens. Then, at the top of the window, click on General and Restore iPhone.

On a Mac running macOS 10.14 or later or a Windows PC, open iTunes and click the iPhone button at the top left of the window. Select Summary, then choose Restore iPhone.
