The right container is the key to healthy seedlings

February, the month when active preparations for the summer cottage season begin, has arrived. Many gardeners start germinating seedlings to move them to the garden with the first warm weather. But what kind of container should you choose for the seedlings to make them strong and viable?

Some people buy special containers, while others prefer folk methods, such as germinating seeds in eggshells. OBOZ.UA tells you how to choose the best container and what is really good for growing seedlings.

Requirements

First of all, make sure that the container is convenient for all the necessary procedures that need to be carried out for a particular plant. Some species need to be transplanted. The container should be convenient for all the necessary manipulations with the plant.

It is also important that it meets three main criteria:

  • it must have enough space for the development of the plant's root system;
  • drainage holes are mandatory because stagnant water quickly leads to infection of seedlings with fungus and rot and their death;
  • the container should have a rigid structure and not transmit light so that the roots have reliable protection against damage.

Whatever you choose, you will need to disinfect the container before use. For this purpose, solutions of potassium permanganate or copper sulfate are best suited.

What to germinate plants in

Here are some options that meet the stated criteria. The seedlings will feel good in them and grow healthy and strong.

Wooden boxes

Natural material will allow more air to reach the roots of the plant and protect them well from external conditions. You can make such a container yourself, and it is also recyclable.

Dairy cans

Small yogurt or sour cream containers are spacious enough inside for the plant to grow its root system comfortably. However, it is important to wash the container thoroughly as unwanted bacteria can grow in the residue of dairy products.

Peat cups

Ready-made containers made of peat are well suited for crops that are difficult to germinate, such as cucumbers, peppers, or eggplants. They can be planted in the garden right away with such a cup so as not to disturb the roots of the plant. However, watering the seedlings in such a container should be done very carefully to prevent mold from growing.

Plastic bottles

One of the most popular options. Summer house residents can build both a glass and a greenhouse for it from one bottle. Such a container can be easily cut with scissors to transplant a plant without risking damaging its roots.
