What not to put in the dishwasher

A dishwasher is an indispensable tool in the kitchen. However, few people know that some things are strictly forbidden to put in the dishwasher.

When filling the appliance with dirty plates, cups, or forks, remember that, for example, knives or wooden utensils should not be washed in the dishwasher. Read more in the Daily record.

Kitchen knives

Sharp kitchen knives made of steel or ceramic can be washed in the dishwasher, but the high temperature of the water can make them dull.

Experts advise washing them by hand. This also applies to blender blades, as they will not work as efficiently after being washed in the dishwasher.

Anything made of wood is not safe to wash in the machine. The high temperature will cause chipping and the utensils will be unsuitable and even dangerous to use. Wooden products should always be quickly wiped down by hand under the tap, not completely immersed in water.

Non-stick cookware

Non-stick pans and baking sheets should always be washed by hand to avoid damaging the surface.

Trays made of cast iron or aluminum should also not be used in the dishwasher.

Crystal and milk glass

Experts do not recommend washing crystal glassware in the machine, as detergents can cause marks and stains. You can make an exception by purchasing a capsule or detergent that is labeled as safe for crystal glass. Set the machine to a delicate cycle.

Milk glass is an opaque frosted glass, usually milky white in color, which is pressed in a variety of shapes. When washed in a machine, it can chip or damage other dishes. The dishwasher can also cause discoloration, and over time, such glass can turn yellow.

The same rules apply to any copper products, which can become much duller if washed in a machine.

As for aluminum products, only anodized aluminum can be washed in the dishwasher because it has a protective layer of oxide. Without this layer, harsh detergent can cause blackening of the aluminum.

The pressure cooker lid

Never put the pressure cooker lid in the dishwasher. The heat and water pressure can damage the seal, making it malfunction or even unsafe to use.
