Čeferin criticises Martinez and Messi

The President of the European Football Union (UEFA), Aleksandar Čeferin, has harshly criticised Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez for his behaviour after the 2022 World Cup final, after which he was named the most hated man in history. The Slovenian official called the goalkeeper's actions disgusting, as he mocked French forward Kylian Mbappe and made obscene gestures.

Čeferin said this in his book Messianico, according to the Spanish newspaper Marca. The UEFA head also criticised Argentine captain Lionel Messi, who had no influence on his partner, who, in particular, used a doll depicting Mbappe during the celebration of the victory at the World Cup.

"After all, Messi has been playing with Mbappe all year. Messi should have said something, told him to stop doing it, shown some respect. You can't do that. I don't understand why Martinez made fun of Mbappe. This doll and all that. It was disgusting. It wasn't sporting, it was primitive, and I didn't like it. You won the World Cup! Show greatness, show that you are not primitive. You can be the perfect goalkeeper, but if you're not a very good person..." - emphasised Čeferin.

Recall that Martinez caused a flurry of criticism with his actions on the field during the World Cup final, in the locker room after the match and during the celebration of winning the World Cup in Buenos Aires when he wore a doll depicting striker Kylian Mbappe. The footballer himself blamed his teammates for everything.

As reported by OBOZREVATEL, UEFA has decided on the participation of the Belarusian national team in the qualifying tournament for the 2024 European Championship.
