How to quickly unclog a sink: methods used by plumbers

Yulia PoteriankoLife
Four methods can be used step by step

Clogged drains are a common occurrence in any home. The active use of the sink and drain leads to the accumulation of hair, pet hair, food debris, and other contaminants in the pipes. Removing them in time will help you avoid serious problems and get rid of such troubles as slow water drainage and unpleasant odors.

And you can do this without the harsh chemicals sold in stores. Express has collected some tips from professional plumbers on this subject.

Use boiling water

Boiling water is good at breaking through simple blockages. Simply boil water in a kettle or pot and, while it is still boiling, gently pour it directly into the drain. Start slowly to avoid splashing or burning, and then work up to a stronger stream. If the clog is minor, hot water can help to dislodge it and clear the drain, especially if it is soap or hair residue.

Combine the power of baking soda and vinegar

If the boiling water life hack doesn't work, it will still flush out some of the debris and prepare the pipe for the use of baking soda and vinegar. Take 0.5 cups of baking soda and gently pour it into the drain, then leave it for a few minutes. Then, mix one cup of white vinegar with one cup of hot water and pour it down the drain onto the baking soda. Then quickly close the drain with a cork or cloth to create pressure. The baking soda and vinegar will react, begin to foam, and break through the blockage. After about 15 minutes, the pipe can be flushed with running water. You can also flush it the first time with boiling water.

Mechanically clean the pipe with a plunger

The first two methods did not give the desired result? A good old plunger will help you finish the job. Use it to cover the drain hole and run enough water into the sink to cover the rubber part of the tool. Allow a small amount of water to seep into the pipe and make a few pushing and pulling motions with the plunger. This will create pressure in the pipe that will pull out the clog. After that, flush the pipe. Again, boiling water will do the trick, as it will also disinfect the pipe.

Remove the blockage with a plumbing cable

This method of mechanical pipe cleaning is the deepest and is designed for blockages that none of the previous methods can handle. The cable is deployed through the drain into the sewer pipe and, when it reaches the blockage, rotates several times clockwise. Gradually, it pushes the dirt further, but it is important to do everything carefully so as not to damage the pipe walls. After cleaning, rinse the drain with plenty of water. In particular, you can use boiling water.
