How to care for your wireless headphones

Some people don't even realise that headphones can get very dirty. Over time, they accumulate wax, sweat and dirt. The case used to store them also gets dirty. Not to mention the fact that there is usually a lot of small debris at the bottom of the bag, which gets into both the case and the headphones.

According to Popsci, the tech you use every day6 accumulates germs and bacteria that can harm your health. The dirt that collects can cause ear infections and various fungal diseases.

Therefore, you need to keep your headphones clean. Even if you don't care about your health, dirt can damage your gadget. After all, it can muffle the sound and negatively affect the microphone, making it difficult to make phone calls and take voice notes.

If you clean your earbuds at least once a week, you won't have to hide them from prying eyes anymore. Apple recommends using cotton swabs and a lint-free cloth to clean AirPods, Galaxy Buds, or any other headphones and their case. You can also use a soft eyewear cloth. Never use sharp objects to clean your gadgets that can penetrate the headphone mesh or other hard-to-reach areas. This may damage the fragile electronic components.

If your AirPods are the first or second generation, avoid immersing them in water as they are not waterproof. Your sweat can also damage the earbuds, as it contains acid and can disrupt the internal technology.

If your case is very dirty, wipe it with a soft cloth with 70 percent isopropyl alcohol to disinfect it. Remove the silicone tip (if applicable) and gently clean the inside and outside with a cotton swab. If necessary, rinse the silicone tips with warm water, but do not use abrasive cleaners. Afterwards, wipe with a soft cloth, dry and put the handpiece back on. Stains on the product can be removed with a slightly damp soft cloth, but then be sure to allow to dry before placing back in the case.

When cleaning the case, take a cotton swab and gently remove any dirt from the crevices. Then use a clean cloth with a little alcohol to wipe the outside of the case. When cleaning the inside, do not insert anything into the charging ports, if anything is stuck in the connectors, gently remove the dirt with a dry, soft-bristled brush.

If you overdo it with alcohol and liquid gets inside the case, open the lid and let the case dry upside down. Do not put the headphones back in the case and do not charge the device until everything is completely dry.

AirPods Max and other in-ear headphones without silicone tips are cleaned a little differently. Apple recommends starting by cleaning the earcup cushions. Dampen a cloth with a solution of 1 tsp of washing powder in a glass of water, and wipe the pads with it. When you are finished, wipe all parts with a damp cloth dampened with plain water, and then wipe dry.

You can also use isopropyl alcohol in this case. Gently wipe all parts with it, and use cotton swabs moistened with the same alcohol to remove debris from small crevices. Afterwards, make sure that all the parts are dry before putting everything together. It is advisable to leave it to dry overnight.

Experts recommend taking good care of your gadgets and cleaning them regularly. This is not only your hygiene, but also the sound quality.
