How many capsules do you really need for one wash: the rules

Washing with capsules differs from using powder

While the dosage of powdered or liquid detergent is easy enough to manage - you can adjust it yourself - capsules can be a bit tricky. One capsule may not seem like enough for a large number of items or very dirty clothes.

That's why Southern Living asked experts to explain how to determine how many capsules are needed for a load of laundry. Meanwhile, an excess of detergent can worsen the quality of fabric cleaning and even damage the machine.

What should I look for when dosing detergent capsules?

The first thing to consider is how efficient your washing machine is. Newer models use less water and electricity and do a better job of washing your laundry. So they will need less detergent of any kind. The principle is simple: the less water per cycle, the less soap you need to avoid excessive foaming. In this case, you will hardly need to use more than one capsule per wash.

If you have an old machine or a machine that you are not sure about, find the instructions for it and read everything about how it uses resources. You can use this information as a guide.

Is it one capsule or two?

In any case, for small or medium-sized loads of laundry, as well as for items with a moderate degree of soiling, you will only need one capsule. You will need two capsules only if you do a lot of laundry and your clothes have stubborn stains or are very dirty. This amount of detergent will work even in a modern high-efficiency machine.

How to use the laundry detergent capsules correctly?

Do not put the capsules in the detergent tray. They will not dissolve properly there and can clog the mechanism. They should be placed directly in the drum with the laundry.

If you put the capsule in the drum and notice that the machine is producing a lot of foam, this could mean that there are residual detergent or liquid residues inside the machine. And now, together with the capsule, they are producing too much foam. In this case, it is a good idea to rinse the machine by running a medium cycle without anything inside. You can also add a small amount of white vinegar to the water.
