Sterilization is an integral part of preparing successful preservation. If you make a mistake, the lid will come off and the jar will break. It's because germs have gotten inside.

That's why FoodOboz editorial team will tell you how to sterilize jars and lids for preserving. Traditionally, this is done in a saucepan.

Technology for sterilizing jars

1. Use a clean sponge to rinse the jars and lids.

2. Use natural products: baking soda or mustard powder. Various liquid detergents contain a lot of chemicals.

3. Fill the pot with water to 50%.

4. Put on the fire to boil.

5. Put the lids in the water.

6. Put a colander on top. You can also install a grate or sieve.

7. Place the jars upside down.

8. Each jar volume has its own sterilization time:

  • jars up to 1 liter - 6-8 minutes
  • cans 1-2 liters - 10-15 minutes
  • cans from three liters - 20-25 minutes

9. When large drops appear inside the jars, it is a sign that the jars have been sterilized.

10. After that, the jars should be placed upside down on a dry towel. Remove the lids and place them on a towel.

11. Before canning, make sure that the jars and lids are completely dry.
