How to check cottage cheese for quality at home: two ways

Cottage cheese is very healthy and contains many nutrients necessary for the human body. It is not always possible to find a high-quality and safe product in the store, but you can easily check it at home with iodine and hot water.

Method 1 – iodine

This method is the best way to check cottage cheese for starch. This ingredient is often added to the product to give it a visual density and amount.

To check its content, you need to drop a drop of iodine on a piece of cheese and wait a few minutes. If there is no starch, the iodine stain will not change color; if there is, the stain will turn blue.

Method 2 – hot water

For this method, you need to take a small lump of cottage cheese and put it in boiling water. The point is that high-quality and natural cottage cheese begins to melt when heated and turns into a viscous mass, while the water remains pure. As for fake cheese, the opposite is true – unnatural cheese does not melt in boiling water or break up into flakes. A greasy film on the surface of the water also indicates a fake.
