The mother of eco activist Greta Thunberg turned out to be a Eurovision star: in 2009 she performed in Moscow. Video

Greta Thunberg came to anti-Israeli protests in Malmö

21-year-old environmental activist Greta Thunberg joined pro-Palestinian protests in Malmö, Sweden. The protesters opposed Israel's participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, which is being hosted by the city this year.

Thunberg was spotted at the "Stop Israel" demonstration in the center of Malmö before the performance of singer Eden Golan, who represented her country in the second semi-final on Thursday, May 9. The activist was wearing a kufiya and a scarf, which is commonly used to show support for Palestine.

An interesting fact is that Greta is actually closely related to the song contest. It turns out that the 21-year-old girl's mother is Swedish opera singer Malena Ernman, who represented Sweden in 2009 with the song "La Voix". Back then, Eurovision was held in Moscow.

The song was popular in her home country but did not resonate with the public, and as a result, Ernman took 21st place out of 25. The performance was a landmark for Sweden, as it was the only song with lyrics in a language other than English and was the lowest-ranked song in the country since 1992. As a reminder, the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest was won by violinist Oleksandr Rybak with his song "Fairytale", which scored 387 points.

Malena Ernman was also one of the stars of the competition who signed a letter of appeal to the EBU asking them to ban Israel from participating in this year's show. The celebrities' words were published in the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet. The artists claim that Eurovision 2024 "reveals double standards that undermine the credibility of the organization."
