Tomiko Itooka, a 116-year-old pensioner from Japan, entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest person in the world. Until 2019, she lived in her home with her two daughters, but now she is in a nursing home in Ashiya.

Specialists of the institution who take care of the record holder note that she is in good health and is still able to communicate clearly despite her poor hearing, Guinness World Records reports. The secret of her longevity is the active lifestyle she led in her youth.

Tomiko Itooka was born on May 23, 1908 in Osaka, Japan. While attending a girls' high school, she became interested in playing volleyball, which became the basis for her later attitude to physical activity.

During the Second World War, the woman managed the office of her husband's textile factory, whom she married at the age of 20 and had four children together. Unfortunately, her chosen one died in 1979, so Tomiko Itooka had to live alone in Nara Prefecture. It was there that the record holder began to take up rock climbing. She repeatedly climbed Mount Nijo and was able to conquer the 3000-meter-high Ontake twice.

At 80, the long-lived woman made a pilgrimage trip to 33 Buddhist temples along the Saigoku Kannon route several times, and at the age of 100 she was able to climb the stone stairs of a religious building in Ashiya without a stick.

Earlier, OBOZ.UA reported that Spanish pensioner Maria Branias Morera, who was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest person in the world, died at the age of 117. Despite having survived two world wars, the Spanish flu and Covid, she was in excellent physical and psychological condition until the end and kept a blog on social media.
