The mystery of the "most mysterious song" is solved online

After many years of searching, Internet users managed to unravel the mystery of one of the most unique Internet phenomena – the "most mysterious song." In the 1980s, a teenager recorded a track that was played on the radio, but its artist and title remained unknown until now.

According to IFLScience, it took 40 years to identify the authors and title of the song. Now it has become known that the "most mysterious song" is called "Subways Of the Mind" and was performed by the band FEX. Interestingly, the creators of the hit did not even suspect that they had been searched for by netizens for a long time.

How the Internet phenomenon was formed

In the 1980s, a young American named Darius recorded tracks on cassette that were played on the radio and caught his attention. After repeated listening to the broadcasts, the teenager was able to identify the titles and authors of all the tracks, but one remained unidentified.

In 2007, the boy's sister uploaded the unidentified hit to the web to find out its name. On her Reddit page, she left a post asking the platform's users for help. Since the song remained unidentified at the time, it was named the "most mysterious song".

How the phenomenon was solved

According to the Daily Mail, for a long time, the investigation of the Internet phenomenon had been stalled, so the interested audience became more cold towards it. The breakthrough in the case came when a fragment from the regional newspaper Nordwest Zeitung was found. The article was about the band FEX, which had won a talent competition in Bremen. A Reddit user recognized one of the band members, Michael Hedrich. Then the musician got in touch and confirmed that the "most mysterious song" was indeed created by FEX.

It turned out that the 68-year-old artist currently lives in Munich, the Tageszeitung reports.

"We didn't notice this Internet phenomenon at all because the name of the song was not known on the Internet, and therefore there was no connection. It was only when I was asked to provide old materials from my time with the band that I dug up my cassette demos and sent them in without any suspicions. Only then was I asked if I understood that the track "Subways of your Mind" was the "Most Mysterious Song on the Internet," Michael Hedrich said.

According to the musician, none of his colleagues even realized that their track had made so much noise online. He noted that such confusion with the song could have arisen because the song hit the radio in a way that was not quite correct: "We suspect that our agent at the time leaked the record to the radio because none of the band members remember contacting them."

Now the FEX members are planning to get back together to re-record "Subways of your Mind".
