"I don't care who sings it!" The famous Ukrainian poet told how Sofia Rotaru took the song from Lilia Sandulesa

The songs of Ukrainian poet Vadym Kryshchenko are in the repertoire of many famous performers. Sofia Rotaru has been singing his song "White Daffodils" for many years, and she took over the composition when it was already performed by another famous singer.

Vadym Kryshchenko spoke about this in an interview with OBOZ.UA. The artist also admitted how difficult it was to record the song performed by Rotaru.

"I have a song called 'White Daffodils' – originally sung by Lilia Sandulesa," says Vadym Kryshchenko, "Sofia Rotaru heard it and said: "I will sing it." The song's composer, Hennadii Tatarchenko, said: "So it's already being sung." She: "I don't care who sings it!" I was present at the recording of this song. And I want to say that Rotaru is very hard on herself in her work. She recorded this little song for two days. It seemed like everything was perfect, we were finishing: "Sonia, everything is fine." She: "No!" Again and again, we go through it all over again. I think one of the secrets of her popularity is that she never took her work lightly."

"Later, I went to Crimea once, went for a walk in the evening, and every dance floor was singing "White Daffodils" by Rotaru," Kryshchenko recalls. "It was also nice because in Crimea you could hear Ukrainian not so often. And then Sofia Rotaru recorded "Lavanda", and it has already interrupted "White Daffodils" a little bit.

Interestingly, Sofia Rotaru and Lilia Sandusa were born in the same village of Marshyntsi, Chernivtsi region. "Sofia is 12 years older than me, their house was on the outskirts," Lilia Sandulesa said in an interview. "She had already performed, and at that time I went with my grandmother to the market to sell vegetables. We were selling near the Philharmonic. I remember a big poster hanging there: "Sofia Rotaru Sings". I said: "Grandma, you'll see, I'll have a poster like that." By the way, Lilia Sandulesa has not removed the song "White Daffodils" from her repertoire – she still performs it at concerts.
