How to clean glasses to shine: a way that will delight your guests

You can boast of clean glasses

Every time we buy new glasses or goblets, we are delighted with their clarity and shine. But after a few months, the glass becomes dull and no longer suitable for serving. The reason for this is the hard water that flows from most of our taps and is used by dishwashers in particular. Therefore, the question of how to clean glasses to shine remains constantly relevant. Especially for those who like to host family and friends at home.

The Good Housekeeping magazine cites two reasons for glass clouding. The first is a deposit of minerals in the water, and the second is the result of the dishwasher.

If the cause is hard water

Vinegar is the best way to combat cloudiness on glass due to calcium, magnesium and other metals salts, which are abundant in our tap water. Baking soda can enhance its effect. Also prepare a microfibre towel.

Pour vinegar into a large container and soak all glassware that has become cloudy for 5 minutes. You can use the same method for vases.

If the product does not work, heat the vinegar. Due to the high temperature, it will act more actively and dissolve mineral deposits. But be careful, glass can crack if the temperature is too high.

If there are still spots or stains, rub them with a little baking soda. The baking soda will act as a mild abrasive and scrape off the stain without damaging the glass. To make it even more gentle, mix it with water to make a paste.

After cleaning, rinse glassware by hand under warm or cold water.

Use a lint-free cloth such as microfibre to wipe glasses and glasses. This will gently polish them without leaving any fine particles on the surface, as is the case with cotton towels. Do this immediately, before the water droplets dry on the glass and leave new stains.

If glass becomes cloudy after being washed in the dishwasher

Unfortunately, dishwashing can cause damage to your glassware. Not only does hard water remain on the surface of the object, but microscopic salt particles scratch the glass, which can cause it to become cloudy. The hot water used to treat the glassware is also not good for this material, as it can cause microcracks and chips. It will be impossible to do anything about these scratches and damage.

That's why experts advise washing glass only by hand and wiping it thoroughly. If you still do not want to do this, follow these instructions:

  • add the minimum amount of detergent specified in the instructions;
  • do not overload the machine when washing glasses in it - the water should drain freely;
  • make sure that other dishes that you wash with the glass are free from hard food residues - they can also scratch the surfaces;
  • take out and wipe the glasses immediately after the washing cycle - do not leave them to dry in the machine.
