How to Clean a Dishwashing Sponge: Four Genius Tips
A dish sponge is great at whipping up a foam of soapy liquid, but it also absorbs a lot of organic impurities into its pores, which can be great food for harmful microorganisms. That's why kitchen sponges need to be carefully cared for. And it's not just rinsing under running water.

Chlorine Bleach
Chlorine in household bleach is a powerful disinfectant. So you can use it to clean your sponges. Dissolve three-quarters of the liquid bleach in 4 liters of hot water and soak sponges and dish brushes in this solution for 5 minutes. Then take them out, squeeze and air dry them. The product can be used on cellulose and nylon tools.
Washing in the dishwasher
Hot water in the dishwasher will help rinse not only the plates and forks, but also the sponge. Place it on the top shelf of the appliance. You can use the basket for small items to prevent the sponge from falling down. Turn the machine on to the normal program and select the heated drying cycle. If the sponge is still wet, air dry it.
Vinegar
Pour just enough white vinegar in a bowl or saucepan to cover a sponge that has been immersed in it. Let it sit for 5 minutes, then squeeze and dry it. You can use the vinegar to treat limescale deposits in the sink or toilet bowl.
Disinfecting in the microwave
Microwaves can kill germs. The main thing is not to put the sponge in the oven dry or even wet - it can catch fire. Moisten the tool properly so that the water runs off, and put it in a dish suitable for the microwave. Two minutes on high power will be enough for cellulose sponges, one minute for nylon sponges. Important: Do not put sponges with metallized elements in the oven. When the treatment is finished, allow the sponges to cool, wring them out, and dry them.
