Borrell urges the EU not to count on the US to defend NATO

The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, has called on European countries not to rely on the US to protect the bloc in the event of a war. He noted that the "open umbrella" over NATO countries depends on "who rules in Washington."

The Financial Times quoted the European Union's chief of diplomacy as saying this. Borrell also emphasized that Europe should prepare for war.

"The U.S. umbrella that we have relied on since the Cold War may not always be open. Depending on who is in power in Washington, we may not be able to count on America to protect us," he said.

At the same time, Borrell noted that within NATO, the priorities of individual members may change.

According to Josep Borrell, a full-scale conflict on the continent outside of Ukraine "is no longer a fantasy," so Europe must prepare for a possible war. He emphasized that "Russia threatens Europe" with both the ongoing war in Ukraine and hybrid attacks on EU member states.

"The war is definitely coming. A high-intensity conventional war in Europe is no longer a fantasy," Borrell emphasized.

It is worth noting that the full-scale war in Ukraine has changed the worldview of Western countries. Against the backdrop of a potential threat from Russia, NATO member states began preparing for a possible military clash and realized the need for significant investments in defense.

The process of deploying troops and new equipment along the entire perimeter of NATO's borders with Russia – in the east, south, and north – has been rapid.

The Kremlin promises the Alliance "adequate responses". In particular, in the form of the formation and strengthening of two new military districts – Leningrad and Moscow.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, earlier the head of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer, called on Western countries to prepare for an era when "anything can happen at any time," including the possibility of war. He warned that civilians in the West should prepare for a possible conflict with Russia and noted that the armed forces are already prepared in case of war.
