By the end of the year, it will be more than a million: Borrell says how much ammunition the EU has already handed over to Ukraine

Josep Borrell calls EPF's military support for Ukraine "unprecedented"

As of today, the European Union has already transferred 500,000 artillery shells to Ukraine. And by the end of the year, the amount of ammunition handed over to the Ukrainian armed forces will reach more than one million.

This was announced by the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell. He wrote about the number of shells that the EU has already delivered to Kyiv and is yet to deliver in his blog.

Borrell also noted that the European defense industry is providing Ukraine with another 400,000 shells under commercial contracts.

"The Czech initiative to purchase ammunition outside the EU is a complement to these efforts. However, this is not enough, and we must increase both our production capacity and financial resources to support Ukraine," the European official emphasized.

He reminded that the EU is also conducting military exercises for Ukrainian soldiers and will train 60,000 soldiers by this summer.

Josep Borrell called the military support of Ukraine by the European Peace Fund (EPF) "unprecedented". He noted that this intergovernmental fund was created in 2021 with a budget of €5 billion. And now the financial ceiling of the fund is 17 billion euros. To help Ukraine, 6.1 billion euros have already been raised from it.

In total, since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion, the European Union has supplied Ukraine with 31 billion euros worth of military equipment. According to Borrell, this figure is "growing every day."

As reported by OBOZ.UA:

On March 15, the European Commission allocated 500 million euros for the production of ammunition. It is expected that the European defense industry will double the number of manufactured shells by the end of 2025 - up to 2 million units per year.

On Wednesday, March 20, the Lithuanian government announced the allocation of 35 million euros for the purchase of ammunition for Ukraine. This will be done within the framework of the Czech initiative.

Finland will allocate 30 million euros to Ukraine for the purchase of ammunition for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. These funds will also be used to finance the Czech Republic's initiative to supply Ukraine with shells from third countries.

Earlier, the European Union announced the delivery to Ukraine of about half of the promised one million pieces of artillery ammunition. Ukrainian soldiers should receive them by the end of March. In total, Ukraine may receive more than a million rounds of ammunition this year in 2024 as part of the EU initiative.

Meanwhile, CNN reported that the Russian Federation produces 250,000 shells per month. This figure is almost three times more than the US and Europe produce to supply Ukraine combined.
