Rublev speaks out against the war

Russian tennis player Andrey Rublev feels no guilt for representing the country that unleashed a criminal war against Ukraine. The 25-year-old Moscow native called the Russian Federation's aggression terrible. However, he described the hostilities as "terrible things" rather than a war.

Rublev said this at a press conference after his defeat to Serbia's Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals of the British Open, Wimblerdon-2023. The Russian tennis player wished the war in Ukraine to end as soon as possible.

"Guilt about being from Russia? No. I don't know what to say. I've made so many statements... I think my opinion is very clear, so ... It's not guilt. It's more like terrible situation. Of course, I don't wish that for anyone. I would like these terrible things to end as soon as possible, so that all people in the world have a chance for a good life," Rublev said.

The day before, Ukraine's Elina Svitolina reached the semifinals of Wimbledon-2023, defeating world number one Iga Schwentek from Poland. The success of the Ukrainian tennis player caused hysteria in Russia.

As reported by OBOZREVATEL, the organizers of Wimbledon-2023 declined the call of Elina Svitolina to make an official statement about the attitude of Ukrainian women to Russian and Belarusian players.
