"Ukrainians are original Russians": Russia reacts to Shakhtar's Champions League victory with delusions about separatists, Crimea and betrayal of the USSR

Russians can't get over the fact that Ukrainian clubs play in Europe

Shakhtar Donetsk's first Champions League victory over Swiss side Young Boys (2-1) did not make Russian football fans very happy. If they didn't find some new phrase to sling mud at the Shakhtar, they preferred not to comment on the news of the match in Gelsenkirchen. Although some of them continue to consider Ukrainians as Russians in their fantasies.

By old habit, the Russian Federation is trying to either ignore the successful matches of Ukrainian teams in the international arena or somehow anoint themselves to their success. At first, the aggressor country exploited the narrative that Donetsk is a Russian city, so we can be happy for the Shakhtar. And after the victory over Young Boys, they went further and dug into the times of Kievan Rus.

"Well done, and both goals were scored by guys with Russian surnames. Now we have a chance for the playoffs," wrote one fan, referring to Alexander Zubkov and Georgy Sudakov.

"All Ukrainians are original Russians. Kyiv is the capital of Ancient Rus," another continued. "But that Ancient Rus and modern Russia are different things," said a third.

Of course, there were also some outdated attempts to joke about how a club from Donbas cannot be based in its hometown and that there is no such team as Shakhtar Donetsk anymore.

However, for some reason, the Russians forget that it was their aggression that made the miners IDPs. And in the so-called "DPR," in 10 years, they have not created a more or less decent team, despite all the loud promises.

"This is news about Shakhtar (Eridu, Schumer) or Shakhtar (Poseidonis, Atlantis)," another fan of Russian propaganda found himself.

"It's not Shakhtar, it's impostors," said another.

As usual, there were few people who really analyzed the game in Gelsenkirchen. And the most favorable reviews were given to the leader of the Donetsk team and the author of the winning goal against the Young Boys, Georgiy Sudakov.

"Sudakov, of course, is a handsome man. He is a strong player. He is very mobile, not straightforward, sees the field well, and can finish from any distance. He will definitely play in the top teams," says Oleg.

"A hard-fought victory. Shakhtar were lucky in the 82nd minute. Young Boys have a full infirmary, especially defenders. In fact, the 2nd team played. Bondar is Shakhtar's best," wrote another Russian fan, although the Pitmen had 17 shots on goal compared to 10 for the Swiss and six on target compared to one for the opposition.

The topic of Bayern Munich fans boycotting the match against Shakhtar is also being actively discussed behind the curb. One of the fan groups called for not attending the Champions League match on December 10 because of what they consider to be unfair pricing. They say that the Donetsk team has raised the prices of tickets for the match with Munich significantly compared to some other teams, including Young Boys.

Across the curb, they were immediately happy to hear that Donetsk residents were "not doing well" with their finances. They called them traitors. They even mentioned that in 1991 Donbas supported Ukraine's secession from the USSR. They said that 33 years ago they sided with the separatists.

Of course, there were political disputes and questions about why UEFA suspended Russia and not Ukraine. There were also clichés like men dying for the interests of their masters and women going to Europeans.

The occupation of Crimea and Donbas was mentioned, and no matter how hard the moderators deleted the comments, a debate broke out over whether these regions really wanted to be part of the Russian Federation, and the current government in the Kremlin and its actions were compared to Nazi Germany, which greatly offended the feelings of some victims of propaganda.
