"Mudryk was shot down, nothing to add": the legend of the Italian national team assessed the scandalous episode in the match with Ukraine
The legendary captain of the Italian national team Giuseppe Bergomi expressed confidence that the referee of the Azzurri's match with Ukraine in the Euro 2024 qualifiers, Jesus Gil Manzano, should have awarded a penalty in favor of our team in stoppage time. The theoretical goal would have brought the Blue and Yellows to the continental championship.
Bergomi said this on Sky Sport TV channel, writes Tutto Mercato Web portal. According to the 82 World Cup champion, Italian defender Bryan Cristante knocked down Ukrainian winger Mykhailo Mudryk in the penalty area, but the referee did not even watch the video replay of the episode.
"There is contact, Mudryk is down. The referee never called a foul on this player during the entire match, including because of the way he was falling. Of course, he judged it that way, but I thought: if it had happened to us, I don't know how we would have reacted. We would be outraged. We are fans, but we have to remain impartial. There is contact, there is nothing to add," Bergomi said.
Later, on the social network X, formerly known as Twitter, he supported the analysis of the episode by journalist Maurizio Pistocchi, who called the moment with Mudryk's fall an "obvious mistake" by the Spanish refereeing team.
As OBOZ.UA previously reported, the stadium in Leverkusen performed the Ukrainian anthem fantastically before Serhii Riebrov's team's match with Italy.
