"Caused harm": the participation of belligerent Ukraine in the Euro Games 2023 commented the head of the European Olympic Committees
On the eve of the start of Eurogames 2023, which takes place from June 21 to July 22 in Poland, the president of European Olympic Committees Spiros Kapralos commented on the participation of the Ukrainian team in the tournament. The functionary noted that our athletes made great efforts to withstand the full-scale invasion of Russia and to be able to compete.
"We are very happy that Ukraine will take part in the Games. I think that Ukrainians have been hurt a lot and they are going through a very hard time right now. First of all, they have made a huge effort to survive and persevere, secondly to be able to compete and thirdly to be able to compete at the highest level tournaments," Kapralos said at a press conference in Krakow.
"We are very happy for them and hope that they will win many medals and licenses in Krakow for next year's Olympics in Paris," the former Greek water polo player added.
Kapralos also said that the European Olympic Committees were on the side of the Ukrainian athletes from the very beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion.
"We helped athletes financially not only directly in Ukraine, but we helped all the athletes who left their country and had to train in different places where they were hosted by our national Olympic committees, sending them a strong message of solidarity from all of Europe," the functionary stressed.
"We did everything to make the Ukrainian athletes feel at home, no matter in what country they were trained and competed before the European Games 2023. So I am sure that the Ukrainian team will get a standing ovation from the stands at the opening ceremony tomorrow. Sincerely - we are all on their side to continue to help them as they continue to work," said Kapralos.
