On June 30, Kyiv hosted a charity race in honor of "Recruit" Oleksiy Chubashev, an officer of the Armed Forces of Ukraine who died in the battle for Sievierodonetsk in Luhansk Oblast in 2022. More than 600 people in 34 countries joined the race online.

The charity race raised UAH 1 million 316 thousand in donations for the Foreign Legion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Details were reported by an OBOZ.UA correspondent from the scene.

The charity race is named in honor of the fallen officer of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksiy Chubashev, nicknamed "Recruit". A military journalist by training, before the full-scale war with Russia, he hosted the author's program "Recruit UA", was the head of "Army FM" and the Military Television of Ukraine.

Since 2015, Oleksiy Chubashev has served in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in 2019 he was the acting head of the Central TV and Radio Studio of the Ministry of Defense, and in February 2021 he retired. After February 24, he joined the ranks of the International Legion of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine.

The officer, journalist, and father of two was killed on June 10, 2022, near Sievierodonetsk.

Participants of the race

In May of this year, the Latvian Foreign Minister ran 21 kilometers in the Riga Marathon to raise money for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Thanks in particular to Baiba Braže, they managed to raise more than 12 thousand euros for drones for the Ukrainian army.

And a month before, as OBOZ.UA wrote, a Poltava rescuer ran 21 km holding portraits of his fallen colleagues from Kharkiv . This happened as part of a large-scale charity race, the Kyiv Invincibility Half Marathon, which raised funds for combat medics from the Hospitallers Medical Volunteer Battalion. Rescuer Andriy Grechanyi ran the half marathon course in full gear. He wanted to remind us that the Kharkiv rescuers whose photos he held in his hands while running died saving the lives of Ukrainians.

And in the United States, the Boston Marathon was taking place at almost the same time: a 12-year-old Ukrainian girl, Yana Stepanenko, who lost both her legs after a Russian missile attack on the railway station in Kramatorsk in April 2022, took part in it.

The girl was able to cover a distance of 5 km on prostheses. She did this to help raise funds for a sports prosthesis for Oleksandr Ryasnyi, who participated in the ATO/JFO and, after the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, fought in the Zaporizhzhia sector, where he lost his right leg.
