Aarhus, Denmark

The second largest city in Denmark is often called a hidden gem with a unique charm. Aarhus is officially known as the happiest city in the world. It's worth exploring for its quaint cobblestone streets, lively university town atmosphere, and warm "hygge" spirit that embodies Danish culture.

This small city in Jutland is known not only for its rich history and culture, but also for its colorful fashion, the second-largest art collection in the country, and even designer swimming pools. The Mirror publication told us what makes Aarhus, which is called the "city of smiles," special.

Aarhus is located along the bay of the same name and has a large harbor. It is a major commercial, industrial, and cultural center of the region. It is home to Aarhus University, the Opera House, the Botanical Garden, and a large Symphony Orchestra.

The Old Town has many architectural landmarks, including the 13th- to 15th-century Gothic cathedral (the largest church in the country), the Church of Our Lady (11th- to 15th-century), the Old and New Town Halls, and the university complex.

Art lovers should visit the famous ARoS art museum, which contains more than 8000 exhibits in five impressive galleries. One of the most famous attractions is Olafur Eliasson's painting "Your Rainbow Panorama," a fascinating rainbow tunnel that offers a colorful view of the Aarhus skyline. There is even a floor entirely dedicated to interactive installations.

For those who prefer to relax on the water, the designer pools located in the modern harbor of Aarhus are the place to be. The triangular floating complex called The Harbor Bath consists of a large rectangular pond, a round diving pool, square children's pools, and two saunas.

In Tivoli Freeheden, a mini-amusement park, adults and children can enjoy a 70-meter-long light tunnel and a 40-meter-long Christmas tree. In addition to the amusement park, Aarhus also offers colorful Christmas markets, one of which takes place in Rosenholm Castle.

Aarhus is filled with cozy cafes all around its neighborhoods, including the city's oldest bakery in Frederiksbjerg called SchweizerBageriet. Since 1898, the bakery has been baking quality bread and cakes, and over the past decade, it has been recognized as the best in the city several times.

Being the gastronomic capital of Jutland, Aarhus also offers restaurants with four Michelin stars.

The city has a variety of offers: from budget and chain hotels to individual historical buildings and guest apartments. One of the best is the Royal Hotel, which dates back to the XIX century. Located in the center of Aarhus, the hotel has a decadent interior and luxurious rooms.
