Famous Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslava Maguchikh has been named the best athlete in Europe. The 23-year-old from Dnipro took first place at the Golden Tracks 2024 award ceremony organized by the European Athletics Association. The ceremony took place in Skopje, North Macedonia.

In 2022 and 2023, Maguchikh was a finalist in the nomination, and this year she won for the first time.

Among the applicants were: Femke Ball, Sifan Hassan, Emisi Ogunleye, Nadia Buttocketti, Nafissatou Thiam, Keeley Hodgkinson, Malaika Mihambo, Natalia Kaczmarek, and Serena Samba-Mayela.

Maguchikh became the first Ukrainian woman to win this award. In 2013, Bohdan Bondarenko won the title of the Best Athlete of Europe among men.

On the men's side, the best athlete in Europe this year is Swedish pole vaulter Arman Duplantis, who was unable to attend the ceremony in person.

In 2024, Yaroslava became an Olympic champion, set a world record, and won the European Championship and the Diamond League final.

It should be noted that at the 8th stage of the Diamond League in Paris, Maguchikh broke the world record in women's high jump, which had stood since 1987. Yaroslava became the first woman in history to jump 2.10 meters.

A month later, Maguchikh won a gold medal in the high jump at the 2024 Olympic Games.
