What to sow before winter: a complete list of vegetables and herbs

The quality and quantity of the next season's harvest depends on the autumn preparation of the garden. Therefore, experienced gardeners do not miss the opportunity to fertilize and sow some crops for the winter. There are many advantages: seedlings appear earlier, growing strong and hardened, and some crops will even have time to produce the first harvest before the main pests become active.

Dill

Dill begins to sprout even at a temperature of +3 ° C, so you can sow it only when there is a steady cold snap. During the day it can be 0...+2 °С, at night -2...-3 °С. The depth should be 2.5-3 cm, and the distance between the rows should be 20 cm. The seeding rate is 3-5 g per square meter. The seeds are mixed with sand and mulched. Dill sown before winter will sprout by mid-May.

Parsley

Leaf parsley begins to germinate at +2 °C. The plant is very hardy and can withstand temperatures down to -9 °C. Autumn sowing allows parsley to gain time and start a better growing season. The depth should be 1-1.5 cm, and the distance between rows should be 20-25 cm. The seeding rate is 0.6-1.5 g per square meter.

Carrots

The bed should be prepared in advance, and sowing can be done when the temperature drops to +2...+4 °C. The depth is 3-4 cm, and the distance between the rows is 15-20 cm. The seeding rate per square meter is 1 g. Experts emphasize that carrots sown in the fall are stored worse than those sown in spring.

Cilantro (coriander)

Cilantro seedlings are not afraid of spring frosts and can tolerate cold snaps down to -8 ... -10 ° C. With a depth of 1-1.5 cm, the distance between the rows should be 25-30 cm. The seeding rate per square meter is 5 g.

Lettuce

An early harvest will come up regardless of whether the spring was rainy or dry. The seeds are hardy and can withstand light frosts. The planting depth should be at least 2 cm, and the distance between the rows should be 30-40 cm. The seeding rate per square meter is 0.6-0.7 g.

Watercress

Watercress germinates very quickly, so you shouldn't rush - you need to wait for frost. The average depth should be 1-1.5 cm, and the distance between rows should be 10-15 cm; in case of row sowing, it can be increased to 20 cm between rows and 50 cm between holes. The seeding rate is 3 g per square meter.

Mustard greens

Mustard greens are not afraid of frost and cold snaps down to -5 °C. It is better to sow it with the onset of the first frost at a depth of 1.5 cm, keeping the distance between rows 25-30 cm. The seeding rate is 2-2.5 g per square meter.

Spinach

Spinach can be sown in several stages. When planted at the end of September, the plants have time to form a rosette of small leaves, which will spend the winter under a snow cover. In the spring, with the first warmth, they will immediately begin to grow, and in a week and a half you can harvest the first crop. The second period occurs in November-December. The sowing depth is 3-4 cm, and the distance between plants is 7-10 cm. The seeding rate per square meter is 4 g.

Beets

Beet seeds begin to germinate at +5 °C, so the timing of winter sowing should be shifted to a period of steady cooling, to -2...-4 °C. Beets are sown to a depth of 3-4 cm, and the distance between plants should be 5-10 cm. The seeding rate per square meter is approximately 4 g. For winter, only cold-resistant varieties or those marked as those that will not get leggy should be chosen.

Turnip

Turnips can be sown about two weeks before the start of frost. The optimal sowing depth is 3 cm. The optimal row spacing is 10-15 cm. It is better to sow three seeds per hole. Winter turnips will yield a harvest in late May or early June.

Celery

Leafy varieties of celery are suitable for autumn planting, but there are also varieties among the root varieties suitable for sowing for the winter. The seeding depth is 1.5-2 cm. The seeding rate per square meter is 0.1-0.2 g.

Other options:

• Horseradish. Planting depth: 2-3 cm, distance between plants: 30-35 cm, between rows: 50-70 cm.
• Leeks. Planting depth: 1.5 cm, distance between plants: 8-12 cm, between rows: 30-35 cm, seeding rate: 2 g. O
• Garlic. The distance between the cloves: 10-15 cm, between the rows: 20-25 cm.
• Radish. Planting depth: 2-3 cm, the distance between plants: 4-6 cm, between rows: 10-15 cm. The seeding rate per square meter: from 5-6 to 10 g.
• Parsnips. 2 cm deep, 5 cm between, and 30-35 cm between rows. The seeding rate per square meter is 1.5-2 g.
• Fennel. The distance between the rows should be 60-70 cm, and in case of two-line sowing, 20-25 cm is left between the rows. The seeding rate per square meter is 0.8-1 g.
• Sorrel. The distance between rows is 15-20 cm. The seeding rate per square meter is 1.5 g.
