The oldest movie franchise in the world is a series of films about the mutant dinosaur Godzilla. The first film featuring the terrifying kaiju was released back in 1954, and since then 36 films have been released, and the authors are not going to stop.

Thus, the Japanese studio Toho, which created the legendary monster and owns the rights to it, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that Takashi Yamazaki had signed a contract to direct the next film. "The production of the new Godzilla movie, with Takashi Yamazaki as writer, director, and visual effects director, has been greenlit," the statement reads.

Yamazaki became famous for bringing the kaiju franchise its first-ever Oscar. In 2024, his film Godzilla Minus One won the statuette for Best Visual Effects. Having spent only $15 million on production, Toho grossed $116 million at the global box office and received widespread recognition. Critics called it a major breakthrough for the entire franchise. Yamazaki was also responsible for writing and directing the project, so the studio decided to entrust him with these responsibilities again.

It's not yet known whether the next film will be a sequel to the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One or a completely new independent story. Films about the monster are often not connected in any way, they are united only by its presence in the frame. It is not yet known when the next movie about the kaiju dinosaur will be released.
