Painted walls need periodic cleaning. Stains, marks, scuffs, and dust can accumulate on them, making the surface look dull and dirty.

However, walls with different types of paint and finishes require special care when cleaning. Experts told us how to clean the walls without damaging the surface or removing the paint.

How to clean walls with satin or matte paints

The first thing you should pay attention to when washing painted walls is the type of coating. Duller paints, including satin or matte, are less durable when it comes to cleaning. Do not use harsh chemicals or degreasers when cleaning such walls. Avoid high friction. The sponge should be almost completely wringed out before you start cleaning the walls.

  • Moisten the sponge with warm water. Wring out until almost dry and gently wipe the surfaces.
  • Wipe the walls with a dry microfiber cloth.

How to clean walls with glossy paint

Since these paints are very durable, they are most often used to cover walls in the kitchen or bathroom. You can use a mild degreaser for glossy kitchen panels or doors. The wall can be damaged by scratches, so always use a soft sponge.

  • Add a little soap to a bowl of warm water and mix thoroughly.
  • Dip the sponge in the mixture and wring it out almost completely. Gently wipe the walls.
  • Wipe the surfaces with a dry microfiber cloth.

How to clean walls with latex paint

To clean latex painted walls, use warm water and a non-abrasive all-purpose cleaner.

  • Dampen a clean sponge with the mixture, wring it out thoroughly, and gently scrub the walls. Pay particular attention to areas that are touched most often, such as the surfaces around door handles and light switches.
  • Be careful not to get wet around outlets, switches, telephone jacks, and other electrical connections. If you need to clean these spots, turn off the power.
  • Wipe the walls with a dry microfiber cloth.
  • To remove stubborn stains, make a paste of baking soda and water in a 1:1 ratio and wipe the area with a non-abrasive cloth.

How to clean walls with oil-based paint

  • Prepare a homemade cleaning solution. Pour a liter of warm water into a container and add one teaspoon of liquid soap.
  • Add 1/4 teaspoon of white vinegar.
  • Apply the mixture to a microfiber sponge or cloth and wring out until slightly damp. Gently wipe the walls. For stubborn stains on painted walls, let the solution sit on the stain for 10 minutes before blotting. To prevent color transfer from the towel to the walls, use a white lint-free cloth or microfiber cloth.
  • Textured painted walls can trap dust and require deeper cleaning.

How to remove stains from painted walls

  • Mix a few tablespoons of baking soda with warm water to form a paste.
  • Gently rub the product into the stain on the wall. Wipe off any residue with a clean, damp cloth. The gentle abrasive is especially good for greasy stains on surfaces. Finally, wipe the walls with a dry microfiber cloth.
