Slugs live everywhere around us, but they prefer gardens and vegetable gardens. Firstly, frequent watering creates comfortable moist conditions for them, and secondly, plants are exactly what these creatures feed on. And this is why they can cause significant problems for gardeners.

Fighting slugs is not only possible but necessary if you do not want to lose your entire crop. OBOZ.UA will tell you how to do it.

Why it is important to get rid of slugs

These gastropods are not picky eaters. They eat most plants that come across their path. Sweet peppers, carrots, beets, cabbage, tomatoes, and eggplants are especially tasty for slugs. They can also do a lot of damage to lawn grass.

However, it is not so easy to find and kill them. Slugs hide in sunny weather and only come out in search of food after rain or at dusk. The rest of the time they hide in the leaves.

What conditions do slugs like

In addition to shade and moisture, slugs like very dense undergrowth. This way they can hide more effectively in plants. These creatures overwinter in fallen leaves and dried plant remains. This is another reason why waste must be properly disposed of.

This pest can appear in the garden unnoticed. For example, it can "move" with new plants. Eggs of these creatures can get with them. Slugs are also attracted to excessively moist soil.

How to deal with slugs

To get rid of the pests, you can use special chemicals. But some natural remedies and methods can also be very effective.

For example, slugs do not like hot water. If you spray cabbage with it, the pests will disappear. Coffee has the same effect on them.

You can also use a salt solution between the aisles of the garden by dissolving 100 grams of the product in 10 liters of water. Another effective solution is a mixture of 1 part ammonia and 6 parts water.

Barriers made of grit, screenings, crushed shells, soot, lime, and wood ash can be difficult for slugs to overcome. Pour some of the above around the areas and it will be difficult for them to get to your crop. For the same purpose, you can spread out rags or pieces of burlap moistened with water.

If you have slugs in your home, you can get rid of them using fairly safe methods. For example, place small containers with salt, mustard powder, or instant coffee in the places where you have noticed them. You can also simply pour a little of the product on a piece of paper. These products will scare the pests away.
