A mattress can become a real breeding ground for harmful bacteria and fungal spores, especially during the summer heat. Regular cleaning will not only rid it of dirt, debris, and allergens, but also protect it from pests such as dust mites.

Hygiene is not the only reason to keep your mattress clean. Taking care of your mattress will also preserve its quality and extend its life. Experts have collected the most effective cleaning tips to help you get rid of dirt quickly and efficiently.

Tip 1

If there are stains on your mattress and you're looking for a quick way to get rid of them, grab a can of shaving cream. Shaving cream works great on stubborn stains like blood, urine, and sweat because the enzymes in it break down the stains.

Shaving cream is thick, so it works on the fabric without actually soaking into the mattress, making it ideal for cleaning all types of mattresses, including memory foam. Simply spray the shaving cream onto the stain you want to remove and rub it in. Leave on for an hour and then dab with a damp cloth.

Tip 2

Mix baking soda with a few drops of essential oils. The best options are lemon or lavender. Sprinkle the mixture on the stain. You can also use a flour sifter to spread the product evenly over the surface of the mattress. Leave the baking soda on for a couple of hours and then vacuum up the residue.

Tip 3

If you need a quick and easy way to deep clean your mattress, an iron will come in handy. First, you need to take a clean bowl and add a tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 cup of laundry detergent, and a tablespoon of toothpaste. Mix these products to a paste, then add about 500 ml of warm water and mix again.

Then take a clean towel or microfiber cloth and dip it in the mixture. Make sure you squeeze out any excess moisture and place the cloth on the surface of the bed. Then take an iron (which should be on low to medium setting) and run it over the surface. This will combine the heat, steam, and cleaning power of the products. Do not use this method if your mattress has a memory foam effect.

Tip 4

When it comes to cleaning your child's mattress, you don't want to risk using harsh chemicals. But white vinegar will do the job just fine. You can simply dampen the stain with white vinegar and then blot up the excess liquid. The second method is best used for old stains. Mix a glass of hydrogen peroxide, 2 tablespoons of baking soda, and a drop of soap. Add this to a spray bottle and mix. Spray this mixture on the area and you will see the stain disappear within 15 minutes.

Tip 5

In a clean bowl, add two cups of warm water, two tablespoons of laundry detergent, a tablespoon of baking soda, and two tablespoons of alcohol. Mix everything together, making sure the baking soda is completely dissolved. Take a clean cloth or towel and pre-dampen it with the mixture. Rub the surface of the mattress. This is also a good way to remove dust mites.
