When you step out of a dark building and into the sunlight, do you suddenly have the urge to sneeze? If so, you're not alone – 1 in 3 people have this reaction.

The ancient Greek philosopher and scientist Aristotle asked the question "Why does a person want to sneeze when looking at the sun?" And now, scientists have found that people who sneeze in bright light, such as in the sun, may have autosomal dominant helio-ophthalmic outbreak syndrome or ACHOO, which means that a person has a 50% chance of inheriting this reaction to light if one of their biological parents has it, Live Science writes.

For some people, light sneezing only occurs from time to time. For others, bright lights can trigger uncontrollable sneezing several times in a row. Scientists are still not sure what exactly causes light sneezing. "One possibility is that bright light can stimulate the trigeminal nerve, whose branches pierce the face. The light that stimulates the branch leading to the eye may eventually also stimulate the branch leading to the nose," Lang explained.

World sneezing usually occurs after exposure to bright light, such as sunlight. Most often, this reaction occurs during the transition from darkness to light, for example, after turning on a light in a dark room. "It's not caused by a particular wavelength of light - it's caused by a change in light intensity," commented Dr. David Lang, chairman of the Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology at the Cleveland Clinic Respiratory Institute.

Light sneezing is usually completely harmless. "The main way to deal with light sneezing is to wear sunglasses when you go outside. Antihistamines, which usually affect allergies, do not affect this one," commented Dr. William Howland, medical director of Orion Clinical Research in Austin.
