There is a rule in the Antarctic that people are not allowed to approach animals. However, penguins do not have such a rule, so they often approach polar explorers and study these "long-legged" animals with interest.

On the Facebook page of the National Antarctic Research Center, Ukrainian researchers shared a video of a flock of penguins coming close to a polar explorer and examining him. According to scientists from the Akademik Vernadsky station, sub-Antarctic penguins are mostly not afraid of people and sometimes show interest in them.

Every year, thousands of sub-Antarctic penguins crowd around the Vernadsky facilities. According to polar explorers, some of them nest very close to the station, sometimes even using Vernadsky's buildings for this purpose. So Ukrainian researchers can watch these feathered neighbors right from their windows.

"If you sit down on a pebble somewhere near the ocean and lose yourself in thought, you won't notice how many penguins will appear nearby," scientists say.

That's exactly what happened to Serhiy Yakushchenko, an ozonometrist with the 29th UAE, at Cape Penguin Point on Galindez Island, where the Ukrainian station is located. "A flock of black-and-white birds moved in his direction and looked at him with interest. Sometimes the penguins even try to try elements of the polar explorer's clothing or equipment on their beaks. For example, they try to pull the laces on the boots," Vernadsky scientists note.

Serhiy Yakushchenko was happy to "talk" with the curious subarctic penguins and even shot a video of their meeting.
