What summer flowers can be sown in December: not all gardeners know this
As strange as it may sound, the beginning of winter is the best time to sow summer flowers. Thus, it's a mistake to think that gardeners have nothing to do in December. This is the time to prepare seeds for sowing, and you can also start growing seedlings for the next season.
You can sow plants that germinate slowly. Some flowers take 130-200 days from sowing to flowering. So, sowing them in winter, you can enjoy flowering by the beginning of summer. OBOZ.UA tells you what flowers to sow in December.
Begonia
Begonias are sown in mid-December so that they can be transplanted into the ground in May. Begonias need well-moistened soil. It is best to take a mixture of sand, peat and leaf humus (in a ratio of 1:1:2). After planting, cover the substrate with foil.
Seedlings will begin to germinate in about a week, but the cover is removed gradually - first for half an hour a day. The seeds need to get used to the ambient temperature and fresh air. By May, you can plant the seedlings in the open ground.
Border Carnation
This type of carnation will begin to bloom only 5-6 months after sowing, so they should be sown no later than December. To grow seedlings, you need to take a small container and make grooves in the soil up to 3 mm and with a distance of 2-2.5 cm.
After spreading the seeds, sprinkle them with river sand. The last step is to cover them with foil and place them on the windowsill. The optimum temperature for cloves is about 20 °C, and after germination, the foil should be removed. Special LED lamps will be useful, as if there is a lack of light, the plants will grow leggy and unhealthy.
Eustoma
Eustoma takes 5 months to start blooming. For this plant, it is better to take perlite. Once every week and a half, the crops should be thoroughly sprayed and the soil loosened. You can plant it outdoors in May.
Pelargonium
In winter, pelargoniums may need additional lighting. The way of sowing is standard, although a little soil should be sprinkled on top. The soil should be watered regularly to ensure that the seedlings grow strong.
Please note that before sowing, the scales must be removed from the seeds and the shell slightly broken. This will slightly speed up the germination process.
Common sneezeweed
Common sneezeweed can be sown until the end of December. It is an unpretentious plant, so the seeds germinate in any substrate. The plant need enough light and water. A month after the first shoots appear, the seedlings should be transplanted into separate pots. In early May, you can plant it outdoors.
Primrose
Primrose will begin to bloom in early summer if you germinate the seedlings in December. The seeds should first be placed on a wet napkin and then covered with a mixture of sand, peat and leaf humus. After 15-20 days, seedlings will appear.
