How to properly wash a wooden spoon: experts gave advice
Wooden utensils are becoming more and more fashionable. People are attracted by their unusual appearance and environmental friendliness. In addition, they can become real interior decorations. However, some people who want to buy wooden spoons and bowls are put off by the complexity of caring for such utensils.
In fact, according to Ideal Home magazine, washing spoons, spatulas, and other wooden items is not that difficult. The main thing is to understand what kind of approach they require and what products are best to choose.
Why do you wash wooden utensils differently than other utensils
Unlike metal, plastic, or silicone, wood has a porous structure, so it can accumulate bacteria over time. Therefore, such dishes need regular disinfection.
In addition, contact with moisture and high temperatures can negatively affect wood. It becomes looser, deforms, cracks, and loses its properties if the material is washed incorrectly. To avoid this, you need to follow the rules that will be discussed below.
Find the right product
To clean wooden spoons and bowls well and safely, choose a mild dishwashing detergent. You can also find specialized liquids on the market. These are also a good choice for wood.
Choose a soft sponge or use a cloth. If desired, you can add white vinegar or lemon juice to the care products - they will disinfect the wood. The water for washing should not be hot, but only warm.
Preliminary care
Before washing, remove all food residues from the dishes. You can do this with the blunt side of a knife or another wooden object. Then rinse the dishes under warm running water to get rid of all residues.
Cleaning
Dissolve a mild detergent in a bowl or sink filled with water. Gently dip a soft sponge or cloth in the soapy water and squeeze out the excess liquid. Now you can gently wipe the wooden spoon to remove any residue. You can scrub the object for dirt, but not too hard, as this can damage the wood.
Rinsing
Rinse the cleaned dish with warm water to remove any soap residue. Make sure you remove all traces of foam, as they can give the food an undesirable off-flavor in the future. Soap suds are also a good breeding ground for bacteria.
Drying
Gently blot the wooden spoon with a clean, dry cloth to remove excess moisture. Leave it to dry completely in the open air. When drying wooden spoons, do not place them in direct sunlight or near a heat source, as this may cause the wood to warp or crack. Finally, make sure that both sides of the spoon are properly dried to prevent mold or bacteria from growing on it.
Additional cleaning
If you want to disinfect your wooden spoons, treat them with baking soda and vinegar. The mild alkali in baking soda will dissolve dirt and grease, while vinegar will neutralize odors and kill bacteria in the wood.
To prepare a disinfectant solution, mix equal parts vinegar and boiling water and add one or two teaspoons of baking soda to the mixture. Put wooden utensils in the resulting liquid and leave them for 15-20 minutes. This deep cleaning is recommended once a month.
