Elon Musk and a group of researchers called to stop experiments with artificial intelligence: it can threaten humanity

Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak and more than 1100 signatories call to stop the development of artificial intelligence

Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, Tesla, and Twitter, and a group of IT experts and top managers called for a halt to experiments with artificial intelligence. They are afraid that AI can threaten humanity.

Elon Musk and more than 1,100 other professors, engineers, and researchers signed an open letter to the AI lab demanding that it immediately stop training artificial intelligence systems more powerful than GPT-4 for at least six months. The letter was published on the website of the non-profit organisation Future of Life Institute.

Among the signatories to the letter are Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Andrew Young, entrepreneur and candidate for the 2020 US presidential election, Rachel Bronson, president of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, which sets the Doomsday Clock, Pinterest co-founder Evan Sharp, Skype co-founder Jaan Tallinn, and many others.

The signatories believe that AI products "can pose a serious threat to society and humanity". When working with them, one should be very careful, but this is not happening.

"Artificial intelligence systems with competitive intelligence can pose serious risks to society and humanity... As outlined in the widely endorsed Asilomar Principles II, advanced AI has the potential to be a profound change in the history of life on Earth and should be planned and managed with appropriate care and resources Unfortunately, this level of planning and management is not in place, even though that in recent months, artificial intelligence labs have been stuck in an uncontrolled race to develop and deploy increasingly powerful digital environments that no one - not even their creators - can understand, predict, or reliably control," the experts signed the letter.

The experts and industry executives who signed the letter believe that the training should be halted until common security protocols are in place.

In their opinion, if the creators of AI products cannot arrange a six-month pause on their own, the government should intervene.

At the same time, some of those whose signatures appear under the letter said that their names were simply used, and they did not actually sign anything.

For example, New York University professor Ian Lekan said on Twitter that he had not signed any open letter against AI, although his signature is on it. The fact that this tweet was later deleted raised even more questions.

In addition, the names of Bill Gates and Sam Altman disappeared from the letter, and attentive users found several fake names with signatures in the document, which raised questions about the reliability of the data in it.

Earlier, OBOZREVATEL talked about what GPT-4 could actually be and why its capabilities are impressive.

Also, the GPT-4 chatbot said what professions AI could take away from people.
