Ukrainian combat aviation has already begun to use JDAM "smart bombs" against the Russian occupiers. Such munitions hit targets very accurately.
This was announced by the spokesman for the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Yuriy Ihnat, on the air of a national telethon.
"As for cruise missiles, we also use JDAMs. We also use them," he said during the telethon.
Ihnat noted that such bombs hit the target very accurately, and our defenders use them to hit important enemy targets.
However, according to the spokesperson for the Ukrainian Air Force, the Ukrainian military does not yet have as many JDAM bombs as they would like.
What is JDAM?
JDAM (Joint Direct Attack Munition) is a GPS-based guidance system that turns unguided "dumb" bombs into all-weather precision ("smart") munitions. The kit is attached to a conventional bomb using sleeve clamps.

The JDAM-equipped bombs are guided by an integrated inertial guidance system linked to a global positioning system (GPS) receiver, giving them a range of up to 28 km. At the same time, the usual maximum range for JDAMs is 24 km.
The JDAM kit includes an inertial navigation system and GPS receiver to improve accuracy, small wings attached to the middle of the bomb, and a tail unit with steerable feathers that allow the bomb to adjust its course as it flies towards the target.

All of this makes it possible to increase the accuracy of bombs with an error of up to several metres from the target. In addition, the JDAM kit guides the bomb along the optimal trajectory for maximum effectiveness.
The ability to adjust the bomb's flight along the entire trajectory helps to mitigate the impact of pilot error when dropping bombs, and also allows for "blind" bombing when the target is beyond visual range.
The cost of one such kit is $25,000.
