Usually, massive indoor plants need bright natural light, so it is quite difficult to grow them in apartments. Experts have compiled a rating of unpretentious plants that are suitable for low room lighting.

Why lighting matters

Let's recall a school biology course. Photosynthesis is the synthesis of organic compounds from inorganic ones using light energy. Houseplants use chlorophyll, a chemical compound in their leaves, to absorb solar energy, and then convert other components – water, carbon dioxide, and minerals – into simple sugars.

The plant immediately begins to use some of these sugars for growth, while the rest is converted into other substances, such as starch, which is stored in the branches, trunk, and roots for future growth and photosynthesis.

Thus, healthy plant growth is directly dependent on access to light, but some trees have adapted to low light intensity.

Dracaena (Dracaena fragrans)

Dracaena, although it loves sunlight, can adapt to less light conditions. In summer, in favorable and not too humid weather, the container with dracaena can be taken outside.

• Watering: maintain constant humidity during the growing season, from spring to autumn, watering weekly. Moisture should escape through the drainage holes of the container. In winter, you can reduce watering.
• Soil type: rich in organic matter, well-drained, e.g. peat-based mix.
• Temperature: 15 to 25 °C.

Aralia

The shiny, serrated foliage changes from copper or burgundy to deep green, especially with changes in lighting. Aralia is great for small spaces.

• Watering: Provide constant moisture, but avoid constantly wet soil. Excessive moisture will lead to fungus.
• Soil type: peat-based soil mixed with perlite, sand, and vermiculite for quick drainage is suitable
• Temperature: 18 to 29 °C.

Ficus "Alia"

• Watering: During the growing season, from spring to fall, the plant needs regular abundant watering. Choose a container with drainage holes.
• Soil type: Fertile peat-based soil mixed with perlite, sand, gravel and/or vermiculite for fast drainage.
• Temperature: from 21 °C.

Pahira (Malabar chestnut)

This is an unpretentious plant that does not like bright light and will grow ideally in partial shade.

• Watering: Watering should be done after the topsoil has dried, more often during the growing season: in spring and summer, less often in winter. It is important to choose a container with good drainage to avoid waterlogging of the root system.
• Soil type: fertile, well-drained soil. If necessary, add peat moss, perlite, sand or gravel for additional drainage.

Zamioculcas

This undemanding plant likes bright, indirect lighting but will also thrive in semi-shaded conditions.

• Watering: Water every two to three weeks, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings.
