Rules of etiquette

At the heart of etiquette are rules of behavior that are universal because they are followed in many countries and cultures. However, etiquette is rather conditional, and these norms are often like unwritten agreement on what is generally accepted in people's behavior. Polite and tactful behavior in society indeed makes it easier to establish contacts, helps to achieve mutual understanding, and creates sustainable relationships.

Politeness is based not only on friendliness but also on a sense of tact that tells you what you can and cannot do in certain circumstances. The experts shared the top 10 unwritten rules of etiquette that should never be violated.

Rule №1

Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing. First, sneezing with your mouth open is not hygienic. Secondly, you would hardly like it if someone released their germs on you in public transportation or elsewhere. Thirdly, be sure to wash your hands or at least wipe them with a napkin after you sneeze, covering your mouth.

Rule №2

Don't forget about respecting privacy. Show a little tact when in public places. Don't talk too loudly on the phone or put it on speakerphone.

There are places where loud music is inappropriate. For example, while walking in the park in the morning silence, you shouldn't play your favorite track loudly. Noise pollution also affects the environment and the mood of others. If you like to listen to music, use headphones in public places.

Rule №3

Many people forget about elevator etiquette. Wait for the people in the elevator to get off, and when you get on, stand to the side. When you enter an elevator, the worst thing to do is to stand in front of the door. This makes it difficult to move, and someone may miss their floor.

Rule №4

Unless otherwise instructed, you shouldn't come to a visit empty-handed, especially if it's a holiday or party. Bring gifts, food, or drinks.

Rule №5

Take extra socks for a long trip, whether you are traveling by plane, train, or car. You can change in the restroom or at a roadside stop. There's nothing worse than someone taking off their socks and shoes in a confined space.

Rule №6

The first rule of borrowed books is this: don't make notes in other people's books or bend the spines unless, of course, the opposite has been agreed upon in advance and the owner of the book doesn't mind a little damage. In other cases, it is rude and unacceptable to spoil other people's things.

Rule №7

Do not point out physical features. You should be tactful and polite and not focus on someone's features.

Rule №8

Do not touch service animals (guide dogs and others) when they are performing their duties. Your attention can distract them from their work and make the owner nervous. If a service animal approaches you and tries to get your attention, it may be trying to help its owner. In this case, follow the animal and assess the situation.

Rule №9

Most shoppers say that the unspoken rule of supermarkets is to return the cart to its proper place. There are places to store inventory even in grocery store parking lots, so walking a few steps and returning the cart is a simple matter.

Rule №10

Don't use your phone in the theater or movie theater. Bright lights and unnecessary conversations can disturb others.
