According to preliminary data, the accident was caused by a faulty traffic light at the intersection. Initially, it was reported that the athlete himself was not injured, suffering only a bruised arm.

Later, it turned out that the 33-year-old attacker had a compound fracture of the right rib and spinal damage.

"The tram ran a red light. I wasn't hurt, my arm just hurts," he told reporters at Piazza della cinque giornate.

After hitting the intersection, the car's front end was completely destroyed, and the tram went off the track. According to media reports, the driver and eight passengers were hospitalised.
