Elo Life Systems (Elo), an American molecular agriculture company, is addressing the sugar crisis in the country through innovation. They have developed a natural plant-based sweetener that incorporates antioxidants from over 20 easily grown fruits and vegetables, such as watermelon and cucumber.

Elo Life's sugar alternative is calorie-free and lacks the undesirable flavors commonly found in other sweeteners. Todd Rands, the company's CEO, shared with Foodingredientsfirst.

"Our sweetener allows food and beverage companies to reduce the amount of sugar and artificial sweeteners while improving the nutritional properties of their products. It is 300 times sweeter than sugar, has zero calories, and a clean flavor profile that is superior to other sweeteners."

Rands mentioned that the sweetener is suitable for use in a wide range of everyday foods, including beverages, snacks, cereals, yogurt, and ice cream.

Consumer goods companies are anticipated to adopt Elo Life's sugar alternative to decrease sugar content, artificial sweeteners, and inefficient natural sweeteners in their products.

"We have produced our sweetener from more than 20 different fruits and vegetables to determine the most effective biofactory. Our sweetener will be available in two formats: a liquid form made from watermelon juice and a powder form made from sugar beets," explained the company's CEO.

Recently securing $24.5 million in financing, the company plans to utilize the funds for further product development. Elo aims to expand the supply of innovative sweeteners, over the next two seasons, with full market availability expected in 2025.

As previously reported by OBOZREVATEL, Ukraine is considering implementing an excise tax on sugary drinks amounting to 0.1 euros (about 4 UAH) per liter. This initiative aims to reduce the consumption of sugary soda and mitigate the prevalence of diabetes among Ukrainians.
