How to wash shoes in the washing machine

There is still no consensus on the advisability of washing shoes in a machine. There are many nuances. Leather and suede models should be cleaned by hand, as well as shoes with decorative trim that can be damaged during washing.

Hot water causes fabrics to deform and glue to melt. Experts told us how to properly wash shoes in a machine.

Jess Farinha, founder of London House Cleaners, and Lina DaSilva, owner of Toronto Shine Cleaning, emphasized the need to use a delicate detergent, as bleaches and harsh chemicals can discolor and damage the material.

Step 1: Prepare your shoes

First of all, remove the laces and insoles - they need to be washed separately. You can put them in a mesh bag so they don't get tangled and damaged among other things.

Then take a soft-bristled brush and lightly brush away any surface dirt.

Step 2: Life hack for washing

Put your shoes in a mesh laundry bag or pillowcase so they don't bang around inside the drum. You can also put a few rugs or towels inside the washing machine to create a kind of "cushion" around the shoes and protect both the shoes and the drum from damage.

Step 3: Choose the right settings

Use a gentle cycle and cold water. High temperatures or excessive tumbling during rinsing can damage your shoes. It is better to use a mild detergent to protect the fabric and sole.

Step 4: Dry in the fresh air

Do not put your shoes in a tumble dryer or on radiators. Dry them in a well-ventilated place that is not exposed to direct sunlight.
